Why "Just Be Yourself" Is Terrible Advice
Until You Know Who That Is
“Just be yourself.” It’s the most common advice given, and the most useless.
Be yourself? Which self?
The conditioned self that operates from all the stories you’ve been told growing up? The one that believes she’s limited, separate, not enough?
The self that creates from fear, lack, and the need to prove her worth?
That self?
Or the Self underneath all of that? The one you’ve forgotten. The Love, the presence, the infinite being you actually are.
The problem with “just be yourself” is that most people think “yourself” means the conditioned human story, but that’s not who you are.
The Self You Think You Are
By the time someone tells you to “be yourself,” you’ve been operating from the conditioned self for years.
The one who believes the stories. Who thinks she’s the meat suit navigating a world that’s happening to her instead of for her.
The one who creates unconsciously from fear, limitation, and the belief that she’s separate from everything.
You think you’re the good daughter. The accommodating friend. The perfect employee. The low-maintenance girlfriend.
But those aren’t who you are. Those are roles you’re playing based on stories you’ve been told to believe that aren’t actually true.
And you’ve been creating from those stories for so long that you think they ARE you.
“Be yourself” sounds simple, but when you think “yourself” is the conditioned human operating from false stories, being yourself just means more of the same unconscious creation.
The Stories That Run the Show
You didn’t choose these stories. They were programmed into you before you were old enough to question them.
Stories about being separate. Limited. Not enough.
Stories that said you have to earn love, prove your worth, and compete for resources that are scarce.
Stories that taught you to operate from fear instead of Love, from lack instead of abundance, from ego instead of Self.
And every day you operate from these stories, you create more of what you don’t prefer.
Relationships that feel separate and disconnected.
Work that feels draining and unfulfilling.
A life that feels like it’s happening to you instead of for you.
But none of those stories are real. They’re just conditioning. Programs running in the background, creating your experiences based on lies you were told to believe.
Breathing Your Way Back to Self
You forgot how to breathe.
Not completely. Obviously, you’re still alive, but you forgot how to breathe naturally.
Watch a baby breathe. Natural. Effortless. From their belly.
That’s how you’re supposed to breathe. That’s how you were breathing before you were conditioned out of it.
Somewhere along the way, you started breathing shallow. From your chest. Restricted.
That kind of breathing that keeps you stuck in the conditioned stories instead of allowing you to access Self, because when you breathe shallow, you’re hiding Self from yourself. Funny, isn’t it?
When you return to natural breathing, something shifts.
You can move through the stories instead of getting stuck in them. You can digest the emotions attached to those stories and use that energy to create something different instead of recreating the same patterns over and over.
You can access the steady place that knows everything is happening for you.
When you breathe naturally, you’re not trying to eliminate anything. You’re just allowing yourself to move through it all.
When “Be Yourself” Finally Works
“Just be yourself” becomes powerful advice when you remember who you actually are.
When you know “yourself” means Self, Love, presence, the infinite being creating this experience, then “be yourself” isn’t about operating from the conditioned stories. It’s about operating from truth, and when you operate from that place, you create with intention.
You create relationships from Love instead of need.
You create work from joy instead of obligation.
You create a life from presence instead of fear.
Because you’re not creating unconsciously from the stories anymore, you’re creating consciously from Self.
Operating From Presence
Remembering who you are isn’t a one-time realization. It’s a daily practice of choosing presence over conditioning.
It’s breathing instead of reacting.
It’s operating from Love instead of fear.
It’s remembering everything is happening for you instead of believing it’s happening to you.
It’s creating from intention instead of creating unconsciously.
It’s choosing Self over self, again and again.
Some days you’ll remember easily. Some days you’ll get pulled back into the stories. That’s okay. It’s all part of the experience.
Every time you choose presence over conditioning, you’re remembering. Every time you operate from Self instead of self, you’re creating more of what you prefer.
And slowly, “just be yourself” stops being terrible advice.
Because you remember who that actually is.
The Self That You Are
You are not the conditioned human operating from false stories.
You are Self. Love. Presence. The infinite being creating this experience exactly as you want it, and when you remember that and start operating from that place, everything changes.
Not because you become someone different, but because you stop believing you’re someone you’re not.
So ask yourself: Am I operating from Self or self? Am I creating from presence or from conditioning?
That’s where your power to create what you prefer lives.
